Faye Neubert-Dava

I’ve been drawing from the moment I could hold a crayon. I see art as a way to tell a story or work through big emotions, so I work primarily with comics and character design. I use art to stay rooted in my mixed culture and get closer to my Filipino heritage. Other cultures, especially East/South Asian and Pacific Island cultures, inform a lot of my art, as mythology, folklore, and storytelling are significant parts of my inspirations, as is music. Multiple pieces revolve around a song that just wormed its way into my head and refused to leave. Occasionally, I’ll do full pictures, especially when I join an art challenge like Inktober or mermay; these are seasonal theme events where someone makes a list of prompts, and artists make pieces based on said prompts. Unfortunately, I have a habit of not finishing the comics I create, so I don’t have many saved to my computer. In terms of what’s in the character designs, I like to create the representation I, and many other people like me, didn’t have growing up. Many of my characters have diverse cultures, split homes, are part of the lgbt, or are disabled in some way, all communities I’m a part of. Other than wanting to create representation, I’ve never thought about why I create. If I didn’t, I’d probably lose my mind. It’s just always been a part of me.
